Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Neurology, 1903, Vol. 2: From the Pathological Laboratory of the London County Asylums, Claybury, Essex In some of these cases a full and detailed report will be given; but where it is only wearisome repetition, this will not be done; but the facts will, I trust, be accepted as true, being deductions from my personal observations on many thousands of sections of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Likewise with the clinical notes of the cases, which include more than sixty cases of tabes dorsalis and sixty cases of the tabetic form of general paralysis, I shall only record in full those cases which present some very interesting facts or rare condition. I have examined systematically the sensory disturbances in fifty cases of tabes dorsalis, and in a number of such cases of tabetic general paralysis which were capable of giving reliable answers; also other clinical signs and symp toms, including the mental condition. The amount of work involved in this can only be appreciated by those who have had a similar experience, and, of course, this research is not yet ended, for the majority of the cases I have observed clinically have not yet come to the post-mortem table. I found it advisable, owing to the vast amount of material at my disposal, to limit my observations to one class of disease, and in selecting this, tabes dorsalis, I thought it was possible to associate some of the mental disturbances with the changes which one meets in the nervous system, and to show that the illusions, delusions, and hallucinations have an organic basis, and that there is a great analogy between the paroxysms of pain, the visceral crises of tabes.
