In eastern North Carolina they begin to come out in mid May, in the vicinity of Philadelphia about June 15, and in New Eng land about July 1 or later. Their numbers increase steadily for sev eral weeks. The period of greatest beetle activity lasts from 4 to 6 weeks. Then they gradually disappear. In eastern North Carolina most of the beetles are usually gone by the early part of August; in New England some are present until frost.
