Book excerpt: The existence of bedrock valleys partially or completely filled by Pleistocene glacial deposits has been generally recognized for more than 50 years ... The glacial deposits contained within these valleys and on the adjacent uplands can be considered to represent nearly all if not all of the glacial history within a given area. This history can be unraveled by a systematic separation and identification of units within the glacial sequence. This knowledge along with detailed mapping of the bedrock topography to outline the shape and width of the buried valleys, will aid substantially in developing water supplies. This study is intended as an investigation of one of these bedrock valley drainage systems, the Troy Valley and portions of its tributaries in the eastern part of north-central Illinois ... It presents a detailed study of the bedrock structure, bedrock topography and the Pleistocene stratigraphy within the Troy Valley and immediately adjacent uplands. Methods commonly used in the study of surface exposures of the drift are utilized to aid in the identification and separation of drift units in the subsurface.
