Book excerpt: I grew up in Sri Lanka speaking the Tamil language. I have always been especially fond of the proverbs I learned in this language, some of which have been handed down through generations. I have gathered my favourite proverbs in this book. I think readers from all cultures will find them interesting, and I think they will be especially meaningful for Tamil speakers. Tamils are spread all over the world. It is my hope that younger generation of Tamils will use this book to find out more about the Tamil culture. In the Tamil language, these proverbs are interesting, concise, and forceful. I have endeavoured to convey the sense of the original in my translations. Some proverbs are accompanied by pictures, which, I hope, add a bit of fun and entertainment. This book was written in the memory of all those who innocently died in Sri Lanka and never really had the chance to have a beautiful life. May peace prevail on Earth.
