Book excerpt: As recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), in its quest to promote the rational use of indigenous traditional medicines in South Africa, the South African Traditional Medicines Research Group (SA TMERG) has assigned to itself the first task of drawing up pharmaceutical monographs for 60 selected medicinal plants indigenous to South Africa. This work is being carried out, in accordance with WHO guidelines, in the laboratories of the School of Pharmacy, at University of the Western Cape (UWC). Its focus is principally the establishment of standards that when considered together would help define the identity, purity and potency of particular herbal medicines by combining the results of the macroscopical and microscopical investigations, antiƯ microbial activity, wet chemistry, thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), LC-MS and toxicity.
