Book excerpt: Analytical Chemistry and Nano Sciences Applied to Detection of Explosives Explosive detection is defined as a non-destructive detection process used to determine if an area, product, or container contains any explosive material. Explosive material is anything that can be initiated to undergo very rapid decomposition resulting in the formation of more stable material, as well as the liberation of heat of the development of the sudden pressure effect. There are many different types of explosive detection that can be used in different fields. Explosive detection is extremely useful for many government agencies, and specifically for homeland security and other counter-terrorism organizations. Unfortunately, in the late 20th century there were many terrorist threats. Examples of these include threats on airplanes and to cities worldwide.
