Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections Historical and Archaeological Relating to Montgomeryshire and Its Borders, Vol. 27 The principal leader of the Saxons against the Welsh was Harold, son of Earl Godwin, a turbulent race. Sweyn, the son of Godwin, had ravaged South Wales in 1046, and carried off the Abbess of Leominster, whom he desired to marry, but being forbidden, fled to Bruges, and when he subsequently returned and endeavoured to gain restitution of his lands, was withstood by his brother Harold. Earl Godwin ruled the whole of the south and west of England, Sweyn possessed the country between the Thames and Avon, Harold had the eastern counties up to the Wash.
