Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine the content and instructional strategies of a Five Cs designed unit (DU) on student speaking motivation in learning Arabic as a second language. The Five Cs of a foreign language education are based on five goals: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. The nature of the motivation that students experienced as they developed their Arabic speaking skills was examined both quantitatively and qualitatively. Even though the level of participants’ motivation was measured quantitatively, the majority of the data was collected qualitatively to capture student voices and gain a deeper understanding of how they experienced motivation and how it affected their learning."--Leaves 15-16.
