Book excerpt: "1Richard and Sarah (Darby) Henley (ca.1604-1658) settled in York County, Virginia, where they lived and reared their family. At Richard's death (1600-1658), he left his farm to his son, 2Richard Henry Henley (1625-1696) who sold the farm soon after his father's death and moved his family to Calvert County, Maryland. 3Darby Henley Sr. (1650-1726), son of 2Richard Henry Henley and Ann Elliott was known to be a barrister. 3Darby was married to Mrs. Anne (Armstrong) Evans (1669-1726), they resided on what is now known as Broomes Island in St. Leonard Creek Hundred, Christ Church Parish, Maryland. They reared their six children there. 4Ann (1697-1747), 5Darby Jr. (1701-1789), Edmond (1703-1823), Priscilla (1703-), John (1706-1770) and Mary (1711-1831). The son 5Darby Henley, Jr. inherited the family home with 30 acres of land, it is most likely his widowed mother lived with him. He first married Mary Thatcher (1705-1727) and they had three children: 6James Dunbar (1725-1816); his twin sister Anne (1725-ca.1800), and Mary (1727-ca.1800). After Mary's death, 5Darby Jr. was married to Mary M. Elliot (1715-1741), and they had five children together: 10Darby III (1733-1821), 42Edmond (1734-1793), 43Elizabeth (1737-1808), 44John (1739-1802) and 269William (1741-1802). The youngest son, 269William Henley, was the senior ancestor who wanted to bring his family to Alabama, where fertile land was available, but he died in North Carolina in March 1802. Three of his sons 11Darby Henley IV, William and Edmond Henley moved to Alabama and settled near Sparta, Alabama. 11Darby and William later moved back to North Carolina and Tennessee. Edmond moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he remained until his death in February 1833. 16Hezekiah Henley and 17Jeremiah Monroe Henley Sr. sons of 10Darby Henley III moved to Pearl River, Hancock County, Mississippi and reared their family there. 17Jeremiah Monroe Henley Sr. is the founding father of Henleyfield, Pearl River County (formerly Hancock County), Mississippi. A large segment of the Henley Family resides in and around Pearl River County, Mississippi. 44John Edmond Henley (1739-1802) son of 5Darby Henley, Jr. and Mary M. Elliot married Margaret "Mary" Chamberlain (1744-1785) and they had nine children together: John (1762-1824), Elijah (1762-1819), Edmond (1770-1833), 57William (1772-1832), Phillip (1773-1829), 60James (1775-1854), 61Darby (1777-1849), 68Micajah (1782-1858) and 266Sukey (1785-1855). Margaret or Mary as she was known died in Hillsborough, North Carolina in 1785. After her death John and dependent children moved to Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia. While in Washington, Georgia John married Catherine (last name unknown) and they had one child: Abner. 68Micajah Henley (1782-1858) married Elizabeth W Lee (1804-1855) on February 29, 1820, in Lincoln County, Georgia. They had eleven children together: Margaret (1824-), John (1825-), Susan (1827-1839), 69James C. (1829-1863), Micajah, Jr (1831-), Mathew (1833-), Phillip (1835-), Selina (1837-), Ann (1839-), Edmond (1840-) and Mary (1843-). 69James C. married Elizabeth Bryant Rentz in 1858 in Baker County, Georgia. They had two children: 70Anna (1852-1910) and 77William James "Jim" (1862-1945). 77"Jim" Henley first married Elizabeth Bryant Sheffield (1865-1911) and they had eleven children. His second wife was Mollie Jossie Clenney (1877-1945) and they had three children. 77William James "Jim" Henley built the home displayed on this book cover in 1880 and is a direct ancestor to the Henley's who reside in South Georgia and North Florida"--Jacket.
