Book excerpt: This guide which was produced in an effort to consolidate and disseminate research information relating to traffic noise and develop guidelines for the abatement of traffic generated noise through highway design procedures and techniques, reviews the nature of noise and presents a systems approach to the attack of noise problems and its interrelated aspects. Some insight is provided into the problems faced by highway planners and designers and remedial measures are presented for noise reduction. Procedures are outlined which aid in conducting noise studies. Design features are described which aid in obtaining attenuation when studies indicate such measures are desirable and feasible. Several procedures for noise measurement are included in an appendix.
