Book excerpt: NMPC performance was found to be the most suitable showing good control performance to both set point change as well as load change. It was also found to be robust to process/model uncertainty. In brief, this thesis analyses the process stability and control issues of Fischer-Tropsch reactor and FCC unit as the examples of multiphase reactors. The MATLAB code of DMC, QDMC, GMC, and NMPC were written and implemented on these two reactors. In general the nonlinear model based control methodologies were found to be the most suitable as compared to linear model based controllers for the highly nonlinear multiphase reactors. They show good control performance and are robust to process/model uncertainty. The general guidelines were formulated for controlling this specific class of multiphase reactors.
