The percentage of illiterates, i.e., people over ten years of age who cannot read or write, in the State for the same year was per cent, and only per cent among native whites. Utah stands third among forty-eight states in the matter of illiteracy. The average for the United States for the same year was per cent. Utah spends more per capita on education than any other state, country or nation on the globe. In 1913, eighty per cent of the total revenues of the State were appropriated for educational pur poses. This does not include money spent by the Mormon Church and other denominational institutions in the State for the same purpose.
