Richard Parkinson. Tomb of Canon Richard Parkinson, died in 1858, at St Bees Priory, Cumbria. The son of John Parkinson, of his wife Margaret Blackburne, he was born in Woodgates, Admarsh, near Lancaster, on September 17, 1797. He was educated at Chipping, Hawkstead and Sedbergh Elementary Schools, and at St John's College, Cambridge., where he enrolled in December 1815. At Sedbergh he was the last student to study mathematics with John Dawson, and at Cambridge his tutor was Thomas Calvert. He graduated from BA in 1820, studying MA in 1824, BD in 1838 and DD on December 10, 1851.Upon leaving Cambridge in 1820, Parkinson was for a short time a teacher at the Lea School, near Preston. He edited the Preston Sentinel, a conservative newspaper, during its year of existence (1821), and contributed to its successor, the Preston Pilot. In 1823 he was ordained and became curator of St. Michael's-on-Wyre, Lancashire. Three years later he was appointed professor of theology.
