Book excerpt: The livestock industry represents a $250 billion industry which supports nearly 2 million jobs nationwide and 40,000 jobs in my State of Michigan. I continue to talk about the Farm Bill as a jobs bill because that is exactly what it is, and today we are talking about a very important part of our industry. We have two great panels of witnesses today to talk about the state of the livestock industry. On the first panel, we have senior officials from the Department of Agriculture who will cover the overall economic outlook for the industry, animal health and food safety issues, as well as conservation efforts. On our second panel, we will hear from producers and a packer about a number of issues including export opportunities, the proposed GIPSA rule, ethanol and the permanent disaster programs for livestock that we have added in the 2008 Farm Bill.
